Early Life

Born on January 20, 1938, in Buxi Bazaar, Cuttack, Patnaik commenced his singing career in 1948, influenced by his father, the late Lal Mohan Patnaik, a former speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

His journey began after winning a music competition organized by Akashvani-Delhi, which led to his debut on the radio. He has contributed his vocals to a diverse range of music genres including Odishi, folk, devotional, semi-classical, traditional, Hindi, and ghazal songs.

Singing Career

He has showcased his vocal prowess across various genres including Odishi, Folk, Devotional & Bhajans, Semi-Classical, Traditional, Hindi Geet, and Ghazal.

Under the guidance of Guru Kunal Adinarayan, Pranab formally entered the music industry. His playback singing journey commenced in 1958 with the film “Maa”.

Throughout his illustrious career, he had the privilege of collaborating with renowned singers such as Hemlata, Vani Jayram, S. Janki, P. Sushila, Nirmal Mishra, Bhupinder Singh, Usha Mangeshkar, and Haimayanti Sukla, among others.

Pranab Patnaik holds the distinction of being the only Odia playback singer to have received the “Best Playback Singer Award” from the Government of Odisha seven times.

His songs are characterized by their wide vocal range, and his unique style remains unmatched. Through his music, he helps audiences appreciate the divine aspects of creation.

Having lent his voice to over 200 Odia films, Pranab has worked with nearly all music directors from Odisha and beyond.
