Soumya Ranjan is married to Sudatta Patnaik, a businessperson, and is the daughter of the late politician Janaki Ballabh Patnaik and Jayanti Patnaik. Together with her Sudatta, they have established several companies including Kanak News, Sambad, and Amaa Odisha Blood Collections.
Soumya Ranjan and Sudatta have two daughters: Tanaya Patnaik, who is the director of Kanak News Channel, and Tallina Patnaik, who is a lawyer.

He was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from the Bhubaneswar constituency on the Indian National Congress ticket.
After being expelled from the Congress, he formed a new political party called the ‘Aama Odisha Party’ (AOP). He is married to Sudatta Patnaik, the daughter of Janaki Ballabh Patnaik and Jayanti Patnaik. Soumya Ranjan Patnaik is the brother of former OPCC President and former Minister Niranjan Patnaik.
On March 6, 2018, he merged the Aama Odisha Party into the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), and on the same day, he was nominated by Naveen Patnaik as a BJD MP of Rajya Sabha.
