Early life
Sinbad, born on November 10, 1956, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, is the son of Louise and Dr. Donald Beckley Adkins Sr., a Baptist minister. He comes from a family of five siblings: Donna, Dorothea, Mark, Michael, and Donald Jr. Sinbad’s paternal grandmother had Irish descent.
He completed his high school education at Benton Harbor High School, graduating in 1974. Sinbad then attended the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, from 1974 to 1978, where he played basketball for two seasons.
Career
In an effort to distinguish himself in the entertainment industry, Adkins adopted the professional name Sinbad, inspired by his admiration for Sinbad the Sailor. He embarked on his stand-up comedy career, initially gaining attention by appearing on Star Search.
Sinbad achieved success by winning his round against fellow comedian Dennis Miller and making it to the finals, where he ultimately lost to John Kassir.
His early success led to a role on The Redd Foxx Show, a short-lived sitcom, where he played the character Byron Lightfoot.
Personal life
Sinbad married Meredith Fuller in 1985, and they share two children. Although the couple divorced in 1992, they later remarried in 2002. In November 2020, Sinbad’s family announced to the press that he was recovering from a recent stroke.
