Supriya Baral aka Babul Supriyo, born on December 15, 1970, is an Indian playback singer, live performer, television host, actor, and politician. He currently holds the position of Cabinet Minister of Information Technology and Electronics in the Government of West Bengal.
Early Life
Babul Supriyo was born and raised in Uttarpara, a suburb town of Kolkata along the Hooghly River in West Bengal. His parents are Sunil Chandra Baral and Sumitra Baral.
Coming from a musical family, he was deeply influenced by his grandfather, Banikantha NC Baral, a Bengali vocalist and composer.
Babul Supriyo demonstrated his musical talent by winning several inter-school and inter-college music competitions and performing on platforms like All India Radio and Doordarshan.
Upon entering the entertainment industry, he adopted the stage name Babul Supriyo, replacing his birth name Supriya Baral.
Education
During his time at Don Bosco School, he achieved notable accolades, including becoming an “All India Don Bosco Music Champion” in 1983 and receiving “The Most Enriching Talent” award in 1985. He pursued a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Serampore College, completing his studies in 1991.
Personal Life
Babul Supriyo was introduced to Riaa at a Shah Rukh Khan concert in Toronto, and they got married in 1995. Their first child, Sharmilee, was born in 1996. However, Supriyo and Riaa divorced in October 2015. Subsequently, he remarried on August 9, 2016, to Rachna Sharma, who worked as an air hostess for Jet Airways.

Babul Supriyo established a career as a playback singer in Hindi cinema during the mid-nineties and has lent his voice to numerous films since then. While he primarily sings in Hindi, he is also known for his work in Bengali and Odia languages. Additionally, he has contributed as a playback singer in 11 other languages throughout his musical career.
Political Career
Babul Supriyo entered politics in 2014 and became a part of Narendra Modi’s government. He served as the Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, and Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. However, he later resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) party in September 2021.

- In 2017, Babul Supriyo faced legal trouble when a case was filed against him under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, accusing him of using obscene words or gestures against Trinamool Congress MLA Mahua Moitra during a TV debate.
