Early life
Akshaya Mohanty was born on October 12, 1936, in Cuttack, to Bichitrananda Mohanty and Subarna Manjari Mohanty. Despite lacking formal training in music, Mohanty displayed a natural talent for the art. In 1956, at the age of 22, he joined government services in Cuttack but decided to resign after seven years in 1963.
In the same year, 1956, Akshaya Mohanty became an approved lyricist at All India Radio, Cuttack. Subsequently, by 1959, he gained recognition as an approved composer at All India Radio, marking the beginning of his significant contributions to the field of music.
Family
Akshaya Mohanty was married to Prabina Mohanty in 1967. The couple had two sons and two daughters. One of his sons, Chitrabhanu Mohanty, followed in his father’s footsteps and became a stage singer.
Career
Akshaya Mohanty recorded his first song, “Gadiala Bhai Dharichhi Sura Re,” in the 1950s. His debut as a playback singer was with the song “Gori Gori Gori” in the 1959 Odia movie “Maa.” Over the course of his career, he contributed his voice to songs in 129 Odia films.
In 1965, he ventured into composing music for the movie “Malajanha,” directed by Odia filmmaker Nitai Palit. One of the songs from the movie, “Rakata Talamala,” became a chart-topper.
Akshaya Mohanty went on to compose music for a total of 75 movies. He was known for his experimental approach, incorporating unique themes, lyrics, and special sound effects in his compositions. Some of his notable experiments included initiating a new trend of ballads in Odia, inspired by popular legends like “Kanchi Abhijana,” “Randipua Ananta,” and “Konaraka Gatha.”
Apart from his musical contributions, he also recorded a well-received drama titled “Patent Medicine,” which won the Best Radio Drama award from All India Radio. Some of his popular songs include ‘Kene Gheni Jauchha Jagannathanku,’ ‘Saata Daria Paare,’ ‘He Phaguna Tume,’ ‘Raja Jhia Sange,’ ‘Rakata Tala Mala,’ and ‘Chakori Jhara’anaa Luha.’ Akshaya Mohanty also tried his hand at acting, appearing in three movies.
